Description: Original oil on canvas by Italian Impressionist painter Raffaele Ragione (1851-1925). This oil is a circa 1880s plein air painted view of the Albert Memorial, Londoners walking and gathering about the steps. The work measures 12 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches, with frame it is approx. 17 x 13 inches and the work is signed and titled by the artist in the upper left. It is an oil on canvas mounted on board and it is housed in a period antique gold leafed frame but in somewhat rough condition with gesso loss and abrasions. The painting is in excellent original condition, but would brighten with a cleaning. Raffaele Ragione (Naples1851 – Naples 1925) was an Italian Impressionist painter. Instinctive and original, of late-impressionist style, formed at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, at the school of Domenico Morelli and Stanislao Lista. Ragione distinguished himself there with painted portraits and genre scenes, proving to be prolific and sensitive to the variations of daylight. In his early works, he is allied with the School of Resìna founded by Marco De Gregorio, Federico Rossano and Giuseppe De Nittis who collected in Naples a group of painters who painted from life. He knew how to capture - en plein air - small scenes of daily life in the bourgeois field, which he laid on the canvas with fresh airy and delicate colors, made to small and large spots. He presented himself with works in this style to the annual exhibitions of the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti di Napoli, from 1873 to 1897. He was also present at exhibitions of the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti di Genoa, in 1874 and 1875, exhibited in Milan in 1874 and 1895, in Turin in the 1875 and 1878 and in Rome in 1893. Moving to Paris, in 1902, he took on an even fresher, soft and spontaneous style, closer to the manner of the Impressionists. He remained in the French capital until 1923, when he returned to Naples. The Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples possesses an oil on canvas by Ragione in its permanent collection. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raffaele_Ragione
