The movie was released in 1998 and stars Sandler as a socially inept, stuttering 31-year-old man serving as the water boy for the University of Louisiana football program. He lives with his protective and extremely religious mother, Helen, and believes his father, Robert Sr. died of dehydration in the Sahara while serving in the Peace Corps back in the 1960s. After he is fired for no reason, he approaches Coach Klein of the South-Central Louisiana University Mud Dogs and is retained as the water boy on a voluntary basis. The Mud Dogs have lost 40 consecutive games, their cheerleaders and mascot are alcoholics, and the players share equipment due to budget cuts. After he is subjected to bullying by the players, the coach encourages him to stand up for himself. Remembering years of abuse, Bobby tackles the quarterback, knocking him out. The coach decides to put him on the field to play and he goes on to become a feared linebacker who carries the team to the playoffs to play against the coach that fired him. The screenplay was written by Sandler and his writing partner Tim Herlihy. The film was extremely profitable, earning $39.4 million in its opening weekend alone in the US and a total of $190 million worldwide on a $23 million budget.
