Description: A CHORUS LINE From the Original 1975 Public Theatre engagement to the 2018 Revival - A Super Rare Nine (9) Playbill Collection spanning 43 years of the award winning Broadway musical. The first A Chorus Line Broadway marketing visual image was designed by Susan Frank, a freelance graphic designer, who worked with the group sales department of Joseph Papp’s 1972 to 1977. The design featured the original cast in the pose at the conclusion of the opening number following the collection of their resumes. The iconic photo was taken by theatre and dance photographer Martha Swope and featured the costumes of Theoni V. Aldredge. Susan Frank also created the design for the 1983 A Chorus Line 72" X 16" Longest Running Show Broadway Group Sales Poster. She also created show graphics for the That Championship Season, The Au Pair Man, What the Wine-Sellers Buy, A Doll's House, Streamers (prior to the Paul Davis design) and Agamemnon. "Playbill reported that several years after the uptown opening, A Chorus Line got its first color Playbill featuring a photo chosen by Associate Producer Bernard Gersten showcasing the show's Shubert marquee. Photographer Paul Elson recalled, "It was a summer's evening, and I made the exposure long enough so that none of the crowd in front of the theater would appear to focused; it was just a fortuitous juxtaposition of people at the right time of night, before curtain." A Chorus Line commemorated its achievement of becoming the longest running in Broadway history with a gala evening that brought back original cast members along with cast from all over the globe. The Playbill was silver color and had the show's logo as well as the date “Sept. 29, 1983." The closing Playbill cover showcased the tag line "The End of the Line" and original cast members Sammy Williams and Priscilla Lopez. Aside from a marketing campaign (but not Playbill cover) in 1986 advertising Donna McKechnie's return to the show, it was the only Chorus Line art to single out original cast members." It was the night on which ''A Chorus Line'' played for the 3,389th time, to become the longest-running production in Broadway history. The pioneering musical surpassed ''Grease,'' the then reigning champion. The night's cast of 332 included the company present and companies past: Broadway, national, and international. Mr. Bennett's crowning directorial stroke occurred with the final reprise of ''One,'' Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban's tantalizing theme song. While one group of gold-clad dancers strutted the stage and saluted the audience with golden top hats, other contingents advanced down the aisles in all parts of the house - from second balcony to orchestra. At this point, the affectionate embrace of ''A Chorus Line'' became overflowingly complete. The final choruses were performed onstage by all 332 dancers. The audience also rose to the occasion.” By John Beaufort October 11, 1983 The Christian Science Monitor 1985 Broadway - Cover design is the "One" finale wedge photographed onstage.
