Description: SALE- 7 for the price of 5. We are offering a lot of 7 (seven) live Asclepias syriaca Common Milkweed plants, two to three years old. NOT small starter plants that will take years to reach maturity. Sure to be a delight for any perennial or pollinator garden and it's so easy to grow. An excellent, low-maintenance, native plant. Growing milkweed is the most effective way to help Monarch butterflies because it is the only plant that sustains the Monarch through each of its life stages. Also attracts many other butterflies, as shown. (NOT photoshopped- These are actual, unaltered, photos taken in our yard.) It is an asset to the garden all on its own. The large, showy, fragrant, flower heads, often in clusters, are borne 4 feet high. Common milkweed grows quickly to three to four feet in height, with a taproot that can reach 6 feet. Light: Common milkweed prefers full sunlight. It grows best in an open area where there are six to eight hours of sunlight per day. Soil: This plant prefers dry to medium average, well-drained soil. It tolerates dry conditions, infertile soil, and rocky conditions. Water: Common milkweed does not need watering except in the driest conditions. Water deeply, giving the plants between one to two inches of water, then wait until the top inch of soil is dry before watering again. Overwatering common milkweed can result in a lethal fungus. Temperature and Humidity: Common milkweed tolerates a wide range of temperatures and humidity. But because it's native to eastern parts of the United States, it will not do well in extreme and extended heat or humidity. Fertilizer: There's no need to fertilize common milkweed plants. Common milkweed tolerates poor soils. Planting: Cover the taproot (white/purple) with soil up to the place where it changes color to green. Water as above. These are established plants- not seeds or cuttings. You will receive 7 trimmed, bare-root, plants about 8-12 inches in length, already dipped in rooting hormone to aid quick growth and reduce transplant shock. Nature is NOT perfect.
