Native Americans called this natural gateway to the north and west the Warrior's Path. The Mosopelea tribe lived within the boundaries of Kentucky for a brief time, at the mouth of the Cumberland River, when they were on their way from Ohio to the lower Mississippi.The Mosopelea were among the tribes conquered by the Seneca and other nations of the Iroquois Confederacy in the early 1670s, during the later Beaver Wars. In 1673,Marquette, Joliet, and other early French explorers found that the Mosopelea had fled to the lower Mississippi River. Eventually their peoples became assimilated into the Biloxi and Tunica, and their language became extinct.
