Description: This is an attractive Pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Pepper Shakers. The shakers have circular bases, tapering hourglass bodies, domed shaker tops and circular stoppers with star shape finials. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The pepper shakers were made in Sheffield by Lee & Wigfull and date to 1912. Founded in Sheffield in 1871 by George Lee and Harry Wigfull, the firm were electroplaters, silversmiths and pewterers. George Lee left the firm in 1879 but the company continued to trade as Lee & Wigfull. The firm prospered and remained in the Lee family until the end of the Second World War. A number of buyers then followed before the firm ceased trading around 1969. Condition is good with just a small, shallow crease in the body of one shaker plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of service on the dining table. Both stoppers fit securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. Each pepper shaker stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high and is 3.5cm / 1.4ins in diameter. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 68.4g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver. The hallmarks, on the upper parts of the bodies, are clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' marks. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter u for 1912 and the H W makers' mark for Harry Wigfull of Lee & Wigfull.
