Description: 19th century French miniature oil painting portrait of Lady and small son signed Click images to enlarge Description 19th century French miniature oil painting portrait of Lady and small son signed From Fine Estate Size of frame 6.5x6.5 size of art is 3" under convex glass Hard to read signature but looks like it could be Haviland. Hand painted delicate pink roses, and the back looks like Vellum. A wonderful portrait miniature, painted on organic wafer, or porcelain by Haviland? The sitter is a beautiful young woman wearing an off the shoulder dress with lace trim and red sash, as she gently reasures a young lad with curly blond locks. Could this be Madame Recamier and her son? Juliette Récamier, a Parisian socialite, was married to Jacques-Rose Récamier, a wealthy banker who was almost 30 years her senior. Their marriage was never consummated, which led to rumors that Récamier was Juliette's father and that he married her to make her his heir. Juliette was a popular salon hostess for writers, artists, and anti-Napoleon intellectuals. She was the subject of an 1800 portrait by Jacques-Louis David, which depicted her in Neoclassical fashion. The portrait was avant-garde for its time, and David may have left it unfinished after learning that François Gérard had also been commissioned to paint her. But this is all of course pure speculation...as to the signature which certainly looks like Haviland. BUYING SECONDHAND HELPS SAVE THE PLANET! "Most items I sell are unique and made by hand.
