Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a lovely antique English travel desk or writing slope decorated with inlaid mother-of-pearl, c. 1880. The intricate design contains mother-of-pearl flowers and foliage inlaid around the perimeter on the top of the box with a mother-of-pearl design on the slanted part of the top and a fancy mother-of-pearl escutcheon on the flat part. The wood appears to be walnut with a rich, deep stain. The flat top of box is hinged and lifts to reveal a fitted interior with two rectangular lidded compartments, a lidded pen holder and a curved section in between two glass inkwells and a lift-out piece of wood that is shaped like a ruler (purpose unknown as it has no markings). The bottom of the top is also hinged and opens to reveal a cobalt blue velvet fabric covered writing area with the top opening to reveal a storage compartment for stationary or envelopes. The hinges are tight and all hinged sections open and close correctly. The two glass inkwells are square shaped with shallow depth and are covered with a silver colored round metal lid. The box has a locking mechanism intact although we do not have the key. Writing slope measures 2 5/8" high (at front), 4 1/8" high (at back), 13" long and is 10" wide. Inkwells measure 1 1/2" high (not including lid) and are 1 1/2" square. Total weight is 4.8 pounds. This nice box is in very good to excellent Estate condition with only a few minor issues commensurate with age and normal use. The mother-of-pearl inlaid design is in excellent condition. The wood has some minor tight stress cracking on the top and there is an tight stress crack on each of the back corners of the flat top section. The bottom of the box was made of two pieces of wood with the center line visible. The lid of one inkwell is missing it's ring handle and button-type handles is missing from the cover on one of the small rectangular sections. Overall, the box is considered to be in excellent condition consistent with age and normal wear considered.
