Excavations at Panticapaeum took place from 1945-1949 and 1952-1955, and were conducted by the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Kerch Historical and Archaeological Museum and a number of other institutions. Pantikapei) was an ancient Greek city on the eastern shore of Crimea, which the Greeks called Taurica. The city was built on Mount Mithridat, a hill on the western side of the Cimmerian Bosporus. It was founded by Milesians in the late 7th or early 6th century BC. В окрестностях города находился некрополь, отличавшийся от некрополей других эллинских городов. Помимо обычных в то время для эллинов грунтовых погребений некрополь Пантикапея состоял из цепи курганов, протянувшихся вдоль дорог от города в степь. С южной стороны город окаймляет наиболее значительная гряда курганов, именуемая сегодня Юз-Оба — сто холмов.
