Description: Rare Early PL Stage! 1947-S/S Washington Quarter "RPM FS-501" NGC / CAC MS64PL Deep, glass-like fields would have been DPL if the left obverse had not been struck through grease, making a rough surface in places. Even with that, the coin is stunning, and this is perhaps the earliest die state of the FS-501 we have ever offered. The striations have just begun to develop in the fields, allowing the deep mirrors to reflect without impediment, save for the left obverse. This is stage A in our variety analysis of the 1947-S/S FS-501 die marriage (see below). NGC correctly identified it as Prooflike; one of only four examples of this variety to receive the PL designation. An exciting offering, and CAC-approved, to boot. We have conducted an extensive study of the stages of this intriguing RPM FS-501 die marriage, which starts fully PL and becomes very frosty over time. Please read the article "A Rough Reflection: Die State Progressions of the 1947-S/S RPM FS-501 Washington Quarter" for more information.
