Description: 1944 NICKEL ON 1943 STEEL CENT TRANSITIONAL WRONG PLANCHET ERROR PCGS XF-45! In 1943 the U.S. and the world were in the midst of battling for humanity in WWII. In order to preserve copper for the war effort, all three U.S. mints changed the composition of the cent from mostly copper to zinc coated steel. In 1944, the composition was switched back to mostly copper, but out of hundreds of millions of coins produced, an estimated 25-30 were mistakenly struck on the prior year's planchets made of steel. Even more bizarrely, in 1944 somehow three of these steel cent planchets were also struck by nickel dies. Ever since their discovery, these transitional errors have had a special place of nostalgia and wonderment in numismatics. The coin offered here is the finest of the four known 1944 nickels struck on steel cents. In the January 16, 2013 edition of Coin World, Bill Gibbs reports that only two other 1944 nickels struck on steel cent planchets are known: the Bill Fivaz specimen that graded PCGS VF-20 and another low grade damaged example. An NGC MS-63 example also turned up in the famous Misfit Collection of Real-Estate magnate David Karpeles. Similarly, the finest known 1944 steel cent, tied with 3 others at MS-64, sold earlier in 2021 for $180,000 and there are 11 examples graded at PCGS in all grades. We believe this 1944 nickel struck on steel cent is way more rare, and way more cool! Bold full date shows and details are very sharp for the grade. Add this beauty to your collection today!
