Description: Called "The Ancient Game of China," this very early American Mahjong game was apparently made before the term "Mahjong" fell into common usage; the Rules book doesn't actually call it "Mahjong" but says that in China it is known by "no less than eighteen different names." Nonetheless, it is indeed classic Mahjong, which became very popular in the U.S. as the 1920s progressed. All tiles and counting sticks are made of wood (unless the counting sticks are bamboo). The very cute miniature dice appear to me to be made of bone. The Rules book and all of the tiles, dice and counting sticks are there, EXCEPT that one of the blue counting sticks must have gone missing at some point in the 20th Century because another of them has been broken in half to compensate (see photos). A few of the counting sticks have absorbed a bit of color from other sticks, but it's obvious what color they are intended to be. The staples holding the Rules book together are rusty, and seem to be original. I found this fun piece of history at a yard sale near Chicago in 1998. The tiles are in good condition and completely usable, with little indication of wear (again, see photos). The box, however, is clearly showing its age; it holds together and the tile trays function, but the lid hinge has been reinforced with tape. From what I can tell, this early Mahjong game is in much better condition than most of them that have sold on eBay. A great, century-old present for your favorite game lover!
