He specialized in techniques such as harai-goshi, ashi-barai, and yoko-sutemi. He accepted challenges from various jujutsu schools, winning every match, earning the fearsome nickname “Oni Yokoyama” (Demon Yokoyama). He was one of the Kodokan’s “Four Heavenly Kings.” He was promoted to 7th Dan in 1904 (Meiji 37) and posthumously awarded 8th Dan. He co-authored Judo Kyohan (Judo Manual).
