Description: Another one of Van's commercial pieces. Probably dates to the late 1920s based on the Dan Miner stamp on the back. Ben-Hur the (movie) was released in 1925, and Van split from Dan in 1933, so within that range is all I can say for sure. The pencil writing on the front is hard to decipher, but at least I can tell you it's definitely a note for the photoengraver. He would've photostatically copied and miniaturized this original art and used the photoreduction to make real (i.e. metal) printing plates. You can see in the notes where it calls for a finished size of 3x5", that's about the right size for a magazine ad. It's also possible that it was used on the actual coffee/product packaging. EDIT: wow, the iconic "Wilshire Coffee Pot" in Beverly Hills said "Ben Hur" on the side... That's interesting, I wonder if that was the client. Van booked about 70% of his clients on Wilshire.
