Description: 1890 Mayo's Cut Plug N310 - George "Kid" Lavigne - SGC Authentic On the Boxer - George Henry "Kid" Lavigne (1869–1928) was boxing's first widely recognized World Lightweight Champion, securing the title on June 1, 1896. Born in Michigan to French-Canadian parents, Lavigne began learning his boxing craft by taking on the best bare-knuckle fighters from local logging camps. He made his professional debut at the age of 16, fighting under the Marquess of Queensberry rules, which introduced gloves and timed rounds. Lavigne was undefeated in his first 54 professional fights over 12 and a half years, amassing 32 wins, 11 draws, 10 no decisions, and 1 no contest. His aggressive style and toughness made him a dominant figure in the lightweight division. After retiring from boxing, Lavigne spent three years in France, where he opened a boxing school in Paris. Upon his return to the U.S., he opened "Kid Lavigne's Triangle Café," a saloon in Detroit. Following its closure in 1913, Lavigne worked at the Highland Park Plant of Ford Motor Company, where he remained until his death from a heart attack in 1928. Lavigne's legacy has been enhanced by multiple posthumous honors, including induction into the Ring Hall of Fame in 1959, the Michigan Boxing Hall of Fame in 1965, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998, and both the Bay County and Saginaw County Sports Halls of Fame in 1998 and 2002. On the 1890 N310 Mayo's Cut Plug Prizefighters set - Released around 1890, the N310 Mayo Cut Plug Prizefighters set has its place among the earliest forms of collectible sports cards. Predating the famous N300 baseball cards of the same era, the N310 boxing cards have white borders and blank backs. The 1895 N300 Mayo baseball set had black borders and black backs. The N310 cards feature the top boxers of the era. While no title is given to them on the cards, they were dubbed the Prizefighters set by Jefferson Burdick in the American Card Catalog. Issued by P.H. Mayo & Brother, Richmond, Virginia, the cards featured distinctive black-and-white photographs of prominent boxers of the time, set against a simple, unadorned background. Each card measured approximately 1 5/8” by 2 5/8”. There are 35 boxers presented in the N310 set.
