Description: Offered is this antique leather-and-board dictionary, "A Primary School Dictionary of the English Language", abridged from the latest "Noah Webster" dictionary of William Webster and William Wheeler. The book was published by Ivison, Blakeman and Co. The dictionary has a 1867 copyright date and contains several additional sections to the normal "word and definition" main section, including "Modern Geographical Names", "Common English Christian (first) Names" and a section of "Pictorial Illustrations", among others. In addition to the "pictorial illustrations" there are numerous small black and white illustrations within the main "definitions" section. The book is approx. 6" x 4 1/2" and contains 352 pages. It is in fair to good condition. The brown embossed hard cover with the leather-covered spine has substantial wear around the edges and at the top and bottom of the spine, where a small piece at the bottom is missing. The gold words on the spine are still partially shiny. There is cracking inside the front cover, with cracking just beginning inside the back cover. The endpapers, with ads for additional books by the same publisher, have yellowed, with some pencil scribbling inside the front cover. There is also some pencil scribbling on the first blank page in the front, where there is a stamp from the store that sold the book-Hogue & Quin Dry Goods in Washington, Georgia (see last photo). I see no missing or torn pages and almost all of the pages seem well-attached to the binding; there are a few in the front that are partially detached. The pages have browned and have occasional light foxing, with a few darker stains from time to time. There are a few additional pages with some pencil marks, mostly in the "pictorial illustrations" section; some of these may be erasable if desired. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
