The novel begins at the outset of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising, with the protagonist, Edward Waverley, joining the army, a romantic young man who finds himself in the midst of staunch loyalist supporters.Sir Walter Scott is best known today for his novels and poetry, including 'Ivanhoe' and 'The Lady of the Lake'. He wrote a lot about his birthplace of Scotland, though with his experiments in historical fiction, he expanded to writing about various places in England and Europe. CONDITION In the original half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed. Volume III is lacking the spine label. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, resulting in a small amount of loss, and to the extremities. Joints are starting. Light surface cracks to the spines. Front hinge of Volume I is strained. Rear hinge of Volume I is tender. Front hinge of Volume II is tender. Rear hinge of Volume II is strained. Hinges of Volume III are tender. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste downs, and to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume I. Front endpaper of Volume I is detaching. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with some spotting. Small chip to the fly-title of Volume II. Very small amount of worming to the tail of the textblock of Volume III, never affecting text.
