Description: Scott #11A tied by JAN 24 NEW YORK CDS. Folded letter dated January 23, 1852 addressed to: S. J. Lewis Esq. / President / Naugatuck / Cont. The letter was from Edward M. Morgan. The first company to process rubber in Naugatuck, and one of the first in the U.S., was the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company, founded by Samuel John Lewis (1817-1858). Established in Naugatuck, Connecticut in 1843, the company owned a patent, purchased from Charles Goodyear, for producing boots and shoes from vulcanised rubber. In the letter Morgan makes a strongly worded request that Mr. Lewis send him two bank notes immediately dated Jan. 23, 1852 and due on June 4th and 7th 1852 for $2,620 each. Please see my other covers of the 1851-1857 3c Washington being offered now.
